Q: What are Combat Defense Squadrons?
A: "In 1959, SAC got the idea
that its Air Police should orient themselves more to base defense
than security and law enforcement, then the principal activities of
the career field. So, the renamed their Air Police squadrons "Combat
Defense Squadrons," put into effect additional training in ABGD, and
every cop that transferred into SAC suddenly found himself in a CDS
instead of an APS. They still wore the same uniform as every other
cop; the same brassard and shield (that read "Air Police" ) and were
identical in every other way--except the squadron designation. This
difference in name ended in 1966 when the USAF changed the name of
the career field to Security Police; from then on, all cop shops were
known as SPSs."
